Our Story

Founded in 1991, Appleseed began by providing adult mental health services to residents of Ashland County, including counseling, case management, crisis intervention, pre-hospitalization screening, diagnosis, and medication/somatic treatment. In 1993, the agency expanded its scope to include housing assistance for individuals with low to moderate incomes. A year later, in 1994, Appleseed acquired two apartment units through a grant from the Ohio Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services to provide stable housing for individuals with severe mental health conditions.
In 1995, Appleseed further broadened its services to include programs for children and families, becoming a comprehensive, full-service mental health agency. Operating under the Appleseed umbrella are several specialized programs designed to meet diverse community needs, including Safe Haven, Intensive Home Based Treatment, Community/School Liaison Program, Co-Occurring Program, the SPARK Program, and the Supported Employment Program.

Today, Appleseed is a comprehensive, multi-service agency committed to providing high-quality, evidence-based, accessible, and outcome-driven services. Our mission is to support individuals in enhancing their mental health to live healthy, whole, and productive lives. Since its founding, Appleseed has grown from a staff of 12 focused solely on adult services to 100+ professionals delivering a wide range of care and support to individuals and families across all ages.
