SPARK Program

The SPARK Program is a comprehensive training initiative for parents of preschool-aged children in Ashland County, designed to empower parents as their child's first and most influential educators. The program provides parents with lessons and activities based on the Ohio Early Learning and Development Standards, focusing on preparing children for kindergarten and supporting their overall development.

Through SPARK, parents are guided in fostering their child’s social and emotional well-being, oral language skills, and motor development:

  • Social and Emotional Well-being: Parents learn strategies to help their child recognize and express emotions in healthy ways, as well as understand the emotions of others. This foundation enhances a child’s ability to engage in new learning, interact with peers and adults, and function as a positive member of the community.

  • Oral Language Development: By engaging in meaningful conversations with their child, parents cultivate their child’s curiosity and language skills. This foundational communication supports the child’s desire to explore and learn, particularly through books and other educational resources.

  • Motor Development: Both fine and gross motor skills are crucial for a child's physical and academic success. Activities are designed to strengthen coordination, such as sitting upright or grasping objects, which are essential skills for future learning, including reading and writing.

Additionally, parents receive supplemental resources to reinforce learning at home. Parent-Partners conduct individualized visits with families at least once a month, totaling up to sixteen planned visits throughout the year.

The SPARK Program is offered at no cost to families and is funded in part by the United Way of Ashland County.
